Pet Grooming
Beagles are pretty easy to groom and maintain in general, besides their ears of course. There are a few tips I’ve learned that makes the process even that much simpler. Keeping their coats/fur shiny and smooth is key. What I find works wonders to attain and keep a shiny, smooth coat is daily body massages from head to toe. Working your fingers deep down into the skin. I do this on average of a few times a day throughout the day. Of course your dog certainly won’t mind getting a rub down as oppose to maybe getting their ears cleaned. It’s kind of like an elaborate belly rub for them and they will love you more for it.
Brushing your dog two, three times a week is important as well, getting rid of all the dead hair that is shedding off of them. I find the best tool to brush a short haired breed dog is with the ‘Furminator’.
I tried all sorts of other tools and brushes but the Furminator is by far the best tool I have found. It’s not only a de-shedder but it collects the hair in the teeth of the tool therefore making less fly away hairs. You may need a bag to collect all the hair in when you’re done because there is going to be a lot of it, you’ll be amazed. Beagles do most of their shedding in the Spring/Summer months, during the winter months there won’t be as much shedding, but always continue brushing no matter what to maintain a good, healthy coat.
Bathing a Beagle is another easy process… first off, Beagles don’t need frequent bathing, in fact four to six times a year would be plenty of baths, unless of course they get into or roll around in something dirty, then the bath becomes imperative. But in general, bathing just occasionally will help keep the skin healthy and the fur clean. Always be careful not to get soap in the eyes or water in the ears.
In regards to nail trimming, I always felt a little squeamish trimming the nails myself, and instead of bringing my dog to the groomer or Veterinarian to have her nails trimmed, costing me a few bucks each time, I found an alternative method, I found a motorized precision filing wheel tool that gently removes thin layers of the nail leaving no mess to have to clean up. It’s easier on me as well as being no discomfort for my dog.(Click pedi-paw link below for more information)
Brushing your dogs teeth should be started when they are in the puppy stage because if you wait too long to train, it will be that much more difficult to get your adult dog to want to get their teeth brushed. Then you will have no choice but to get the cleaning done by a Veterinarian and most times they will have to put your dog under anesthesia to do the process. Always make sure to use a dog toothpaste and not a human toothpaste, very important.
There is also a preventive measure product on the market today that can save you time and/or money with the upkeep of your dogs teeth. It’s called ‘Plaque Attack’, it’s a triple care dental spray that sprays away plaque, tarter and bad breath. It’s all natural and safe to use on dogs or cats of all sizes.
