LEAD/LEASHES/COLLARS

Beagles are innate hunters; they will follow a scent to kingdom come given the opportunity. That is why it is imperative to keep your Beagle on a leash at all times, except of course if they are fenced in. If for some reason your Beagle is not on a leash and they do pick up a scent of a rabbit or a cat, etc., don’t take it personally that they don’t adhere to your commands and just keep running. Some might think with the proper training they can take their Beagle off the leash, but unfortunately that is not the case and even if you try calling them back you won’t have any luck because they forget their name too… everything you have trained them to do or thought you trained them to do will go out the window once they pick up a scent.
I have found using a harness instead of a collar when walking a Beagle works out so much better, therefore putting less tension on the dog’s neck area. It’s not easy walking a Beagle compared to other breeds because of their passion to sniff and follow scents. They are extremely strong dogs due to their body structure as well as being low to the ground, that you will find yourself being pulled and dragged all over the place. So being securely fitted into a harness gives you more control and of course makes it much easier to train your dog to walk next to you rather than in front of you.

Another thing I’d like to emphasize in regards to walking your dog and that is, do not start your puppy out with long walks right from the get go, being that the pads on their paws are not fully developed yet can cause discomfort and even injury making it a not so pleasurable experience with a bad memory attached, then you may have a problem in the future getting your dog to want to take walks. Short walks in the beginning will be just fine getting them acclimated to the different terrains out there. As your dog gets a little older that’s when you can start increasing the time span of walks/runs.
